PETE & CO | MILK STOOL

The stool that has been doing its job for 2,000 years.

The three-legged milking stool is one of the oldest pieces of functional design ever made. Three legs on uneven ground will never wobble. Three points always form a stable plane, no matter the surface. Four legs need level ground. Three legs work anywhere. Dairy farmers figured this out thousands of years ago, and every attempt to improve on the design has eventually arrived back at the same place.

In 19th century England, milkmaids would carry their stools and buckets out to the fields twice a day, settling low to the ground beside the cow, leaning forward into the work. The low seat and three-legged design made that possible - stable on rough ground, steady under the weight of a leaning body.

Our Pete & Co version carries the same spirit - three legs, round seat, solid wood, built to last. Made from locally salvaged timber that would otherwise have gone to landfill, each stool is completely unique, a different grain, different colour, different character from its past life. The one you receive will never be identical to another.

Use it as a step stool, a plant stand, a side table, a garden perch, or simply somewhere to rest a cup of tea in the home or out in the garden.

Simply oil occasionally to keep the wood nourished and looking its best.
